Trofeo Mediterraneo: An Unforgettable Adventure In Spain

First experiences are usually special and memorable. For 10-year-old Chawin Chumthong, his first experience of travelling overseas will be difficult to top. Besides being a part of the SISB International Football Academy U-11 team that claimed the title of Trofeo Mediterraneo champions, Chawin also walked away with the Golden Glove, an award for the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

“I’m really enjoying myself. It’s so interesting to see and experience new things and I hope that I can get better as a player and go to many other countries and competitions around the world.”

After sweeping the group stage of the tournament with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Ukraine’s Djuss Berdiansk, and two 9-0 demolitions of F.K. Tirana (Albania) and FFV SF Frankfurt (Germany), the team sauntered into the knockout stages as group winners.

Their dominance continued, racking up a 7-1 win over F.K. Rinia (Albania) in the semi-final, and blowing away Belgium’s AJ Molenbeek with a 6-0 victory in the final.

The team’s quality was evident on both ends of the pitch, with striker Pirada Larsawat, 10, claiming the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer.

He said: “I’m so happy! Every time I score it puts a smile on my face. Getting the Golden Boot award gave me an even bigger smile.”

Participation in the tournament held in Pineda de Mar, Spain was made possible with support from SISB Public Company Limited, in collaboration with ThaiBev Football Academy as well as sportswear manufacturer Evo Sport.

The SISB International Football Academy was started in 2017 to provide top coaching expertise using world-class facilities. Its trainees, who are between seven and 18 years old, are trained by Dr Jatuporn Pramolbal, Head Coach of the Thai Women’s National Football team that won Gold at the 27th South-east Asian Games, and his team of Football Association of Thailand licensed coaches, including Thidarat Wiwasukhu, who coached the boys in Spain.

“I’m extremely proud of the team. They came here for the love of the game without any expectations. We showed what SISB, and Thailand as a whole, is capable of. I would like to thank everyone who helped the boys get to Spain. This is a memory that they will hold dear for the rest of their lives.”

Besides the tournament, the 13-strong team also participated in a friendly match with FC Argentona, beating them 9-2. There was also time for a special treat for the boys, in the form of a stadium tour of Nou Camp, the legendary grounds of FC Barcelona, one of the best and most famous football clubs in the world.
